David Mayfield was in a roping accident at the annual TCU Ranch Management Alumni Summer Roping on June 29 in Guthrie, Oklahoma. David was coming out of the box to head a steer when his horse stumbled and pitched him to the ground. David hit the ground head first, fracturing two cervical vertebrae. David stopped breathing. Thanks to the quick actions of fellow participants, David was given CPR which saved his life.
David was taken by Care Flight to Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, where he spent the next several weeks in ICU. David has had numerous surgeries and setbacks, but his determination and the support and perseverance of his family and friends helped him to keep fighting. David was moved to Baylor Rehab in Dallas in August where he continues to mend. He has made tremendous progress, but his journey is far from over.
David and Julie have demonstrated incredible faith, love and strength through this trial. They would tell you that they couldn’t have done it without the thoughts and prayers of family, friends, and even strangers. But those of us who have watched them on this journey would say they have given us much, much more.
A special fund has been set up by friends of David to help the family with expenses and any future needs that David might have.
